Welcome to Pamlico County

No more than 12,000 people live in this rural county in eastern North Carolina. We have two stoplights (one is very new) and several dollar stores. The farmlands and backyard creeks that snake through the county from the Pamlico Sound are as beautiful and unknown as the people who live and work here.

Starting this fall, I will introduce you to the people who make this community--celebrating the people who call it home. I will cover school board meetings, proms and church and all of the things that make us who we are. Missing, will be the politics that often divide us.

Join me on a visual exploration of a place often overlooked. A place I call home.

Rallying Round the Polling Station: The People Who Make Our Elections Work

It’s 8 a.m. and the Bayboro polling station is all set up in the unadorned red-brick county courthouse. Polls have been open since 6:30 a.m., but the poll workers showed up about an hour earlier—before the sun—organizing their roles, going over the rules and establishing both the standard and the tempo for the day: accuracy and efficiency.
